What Is Blackboard?

Blackboard is more than a course development and delivery tool for teaching and learning. It uses digital technology to create a global learning environment.

In general, Blackboard is a content delivery and online activity system designed for education. It provides an extensive set of features that make it easy to coordinate and present course materials. You can post class material organized as:

  • Course announcements
  • Course Material
  • Staff Information
  • Assignments
  • Resources

A greater asset is Blackboard's built-in communication and student tools:

  • Email sender (whether to individuals or groups)
  • Threaded discussion board (with advanced search and thread manipulation tools)
  • Class roster
  • Students web pages
  • Virtual chat
  • Digital Drop Box
  • Online grades
  • Group pages
  • Course Statistic

Course Enrollment

Generally, FSU students will be enrolled in their classes automatically. For FAMU students, if the instructor is permitting "self enrollment" follow steps 1 & 2; otherwise the instructor will have to enroll you in their course.

  1. Search for your Course's Blackboard Website
    • Click on the "Courses" tab.
      • On the Course Catalog to the right of the screen, click on the "FAMU Engineering Students" module
      • Click on the link of your department
      • Search for your course website or on the search box to the left of the screen, enter your course's prefix and number. e.g. EIN4560
      • Click on "GO!"
  2. Enroll in the Course Website
    • If your course is on the search results, click on the "enroll" button next to the course title.
    • The next time you access Blackboard, you will be able to access your course website from your "Home" & "Courses" tab.
Access to Course Website

All course websites in the Blackboard environment are created by request of the instructors. This is why in the "My Courses" area on the "MY FSU" page you will only see the classes for which the instructors have requested a website. You can find out if the classes for which you registered have a website by performing a search in the course catalog available through the "Courses" tab.
