Opportunities are available to students for participation and membership in technical, professional, and honor societies most closely associated with Chemical Engineering. These activities are actively supported by the Department and its faculty. The nationally accredited student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) is an important organization that allows for the introduction of professionalism and ethics into the undergraduate experience through functions such as participation in national and regional meetings, plant inspection trips, and talks by local professional chemical engineers. AIChE student chapter activities include fundraising to support travel to meetings, charitable and community service work, hosting speakers at chapter meetings, and professional development seminars. Each year, a representative AIChE group attends and presents papers at the AIChE National Meeting or the Southern Student Regional Conference.

Recently, the FAMU-FSU student chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) was re-chartered to provide professional support and activities for students choosing the Biomedical Engineering major option. The mission of the FAMU-FSU chapter of BMES is to encourage the development, dissemination, integration and utilization of knowledge in biomedical engineering. The BMES chapter holds bi-weekly meetings and invites speakers from academia and industry to discuss issues experienced by practicing biomedical engineers and methods to support career development. In addition, the BMES chapter maintains outreach through both internal Blackboard and external Facebook sites online. To encourage undergraduate research and external dissemination of these activities, the chapter provides financial support for students who are able to attend and present at the annual national BMES meeting as well as other local or regional conferences. Philanthropically, the FAMU-FSU BMES student chapter is very involved with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk.

Due to the nature of the department, the student chapters of AIChE and BMES engage in many of the same activities and share similar membership. This crossover is encouraged, both with respect to career building and social activities. In addition, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has a long-established chapter of Tau Beta Pi, which counts among its members many of our top chemical engineering students.
